You should be able to use pretty much any version of Linux. You can download it, but like Oracle it will be a huge download. Take a look at: http://www.linux.org which has an entire list of distributions and where you can obtain them for free or a low price.

I've used RedHat, Caldera and Slackware in the recent past and all are OK. Oracle is developed with RedHat in mind, so for easiest use, that's probably the best choice. I use Slackware 7.1 (with upgraded software).

Slackware 7.1 comes with kernel version 2.2.17, while many of the others come with 2.2.16 or earlier. Personally (and that's all it's worth is personally), I'd update to one of the 2.4.0-test kernels after installing the software. However, that's a small thing.
