If it's the same version, the migration is a few scripts to change word size and is documented in the readme.doc or mig.doc in ORACLE_HOME. If you are upgrading from an earlier release AND changing word size you also need to run the appropriate u8xxxx.sql script. I've always found the readme(s) sufficient doc.

I've done this several times. With 64 bit, the SGA is no longer limited to 1.7gig (at least for HP-UX). We needed this "feature" for a very resource intensive HR app which now runs on a 5 gig SGA. Also, just by going to 64-bit without increasing the SGA we noticed a dramatic performance improvement. This is probably application-dependent, as to whether you see gains, but in our case we did.

HTH,
Mary Jo

Rao,
Thanks for responding to my message and for the heading. I have checked the page, there's not that much about 64-bit. What I'm interested in is as followed,
- Anybody who is using 64-bit oracle, please your experience(performance,
implementation, maintenance)
- Any other place talking about 64-bit v. 32-bit?

Zhong

Zhong,

I put the heading in the subject.

There are various ways to know whether 816 installation is 64 or 32 bit. The quickest and easiest way is log into SQL with a valid user name and password. In the header, you will a message similar to the following:

Oracle8i Enterprise Edition Release 8.1.6.0.0 - 64bit Production

With the Partitioning option

JServer Release 8.1.6.0.0 - Production

2. Oracle Technet has the documentation.

3. Regarding advantages - You can browse additional functions incorporated from the following link.

http://technet.oracle.com/products/oracle8i <http://technet.oracle.com/products/oracle8i>

The above link also tells you the product features incorporated for Release 3.

How do I tell if my current installation of 8.1.6 oracle server on Solaris 2.7 is 64-bit or 32-bit?
And any documentation available on 64-bit Oracle Server 8.1.6? What's the advantages?

TIA,
Zhong
