If you absolutely want to use dbms_output rather than utl_file, I would
create a procedure to handle long strings, something like the following
(warning! untested code written off of the top of my head!!)
create or replace procedure do_write (str in varchar2) is
i number := 1;
begin
while (i <= length(str)) loop dbms_output.put_line(substr(str, i, 254)); i := i + 254; end loop;
You could enhance this to break on words rather than on strict number of characters, put versus put_line, etc.
