Personally I have not done any of them but from what I hear the migration from Oracle7 to 8.1.5 works
really well. Maybe you could try a two step process to get though the whole thing. Do the initial
migration and then perform a straight forward database upgrade. However, I would try the 8.1.6
migration first and just have a full backup to go back to.   -----Original Message-----

Chuck, sorry can't say i've done any of them

700G is not an option for exp/imp, huh :)

Have you done any 7.3 to 8.1.6 migrations? How did they go? We tried to do 7.3 to 8.1.5 about 6 months ago using the migration utility and ran into one snag after another. We never got it to work. We eventually decided to go the export/import route on all databases that were small enough, but we have a 700g DW that we'll need to run through the migration utility and there's much trepidation about it. That's part of the reason why it still sitting on 7.3.3. The platform we tried it on is SGI.

i've done about 10 8.0.5 to 8.1.X upgrades, the biggest thing to worry about is

running out of space in the system tablespace. I think the install
instructions are a little short sided in what you really need.
I added 150M to my system ts and it barely got me thru, if ur loading
up server
      side java(initjvm..sql, you'll need more).
