No, I don't find that there is a compelling reason to use the catalog as well. Most of the information that you will need is in the controlfile. Unless there is a lost in all the controlfiles.. But since the catalog database is a relatively small and easy to manage database. I would just live with it.

These are the features who are not available when you don't have the catalog:

1)point-in-time tablespace recovery
2)stored scripts
3)recovery when the controlfile is lost.

Sorry for the pun...

Anyway, under Oracle 8.0.X, there seemed to be good reasons for using the REpository with RMAN but now under 8i a lot is tracked in the control file.
(See the "Consequences of Using the Control file for RMAN Metadata" section
of the "Backup and Recovery Guide.") So now, after revisiting the docs I'm wondering if there really is as compelling a reason to use the repository as
there was before.

Any thoughts?
