Does you company already have Unix or Linux skills available?

If not, seems to me that moving from SQL 2000 to Oracle9i is sufficient.

But, if your company does not have *nix experience, then you might not want
to also take on switching OS.

Of course, any DBAs would need training to adequately handle Oracle . But,
do you want to also train Unix/Linux System Admins?

My guess would be the performance of Oracle would be about the same on
either OS . You may need more memory on Windows 2000 since it chews up a
fair amount of memory compared to Unix/Linux. This is strictly a guess on my
part.

Although it may not be needed that often ... another big difference I
noticed is ... if the server is under a very heavy load, logging into the
server to debug the performance problems is a lot easier (more responsive)
with *nix.

Personally, I have worked on both and much prefer supporting Oracle on
Unix/Linux .
