If you know VB or PowerBuilder and a relational database like Microsoft
Access you can offer some additional skills that can be used for a
maintenance and support position in an enterprise application. I came into
my current company with about a year of SQL Server and about 7 years of
Microsoft Access, but only academic knowledge of Oracle and they offered me
the position. Most of the challenge is proving your worth once you join.
Don't overlook small short term projects that can give you some leverage
when seeking f/t work. They're invaluable. A high percentage of jobs in the
market involve supporting existing code(such as PL/SQL Stored procedures,
packages, DDL, DML and so on). So keep trying and good luck!
