I think Dereck is doing it right; In a real system unexpected requirements can emerge; the sources that claim something is unique or can't be changed can be wrong; Adding an artificial numeric key can avoid the need to rewrite hundreds of queries and dml statements. The waste of resources in the added numeric key can be minor compared to the labor costs. The numeric key also simplifies joins and reduces errors comparatively.
