I haven't personally experienced it, but posters to the oracle-l at freelists have complained about networking changes, such that db_links between Oracle 8 and Oracle 10g R1 have issues. Some have used intermedia databases (e.g.9.2) as gateways between the incompatible releases.

If this is the case for you, you might want to consider upgrading only to 9i R2 for the time being, and upgrade to the 10g release that would be best at a later time.

These types of issues would most certainly be identified in your testing.

I wasn't able to find the postings, so this may be completely incorrect.

Perhaps opening an iTAR might be your best bet.
