Uninstalling Oracle Patch  4198954 did the trick
(patch contained
compat-libcwait-2.0-2.i386.rpm  
compat-oracle-rhel4-1.0-5.i386.rpm)
There is no such patch for x64

As for slow install, I'll try to install on local disk instead of the
disk array, see how long that takes (suspecting misconfigured disk
array)
