I believe the OP is correct, (
http://download-west.oracle.com/docs/cd/B10501_01/server.920/a96566/rcmdupdb.htm#442237 ) you have to copy the files. I suppose one could use the OS to nfs back to the original files over the net, but I also suppose that would screw up big time, Oracle certainly wouldn't support it (if anyone knows exceptions, speak up).

I also would like to know why this is. I speculate it is because standby was a cool hack to recovery, as opposed to something designed, then it was hacked into rman.
