Is an spfile or an init.ora being used to start the database. I think it would be wise to create an init.ora and specify it in the startup command if an spfile is in use. That you can can verify that all file locations: control_files, user_dump_dest, log_archive_dest_n etc,,, have been set correctly for the new box.

I also take it that the old server and the new server use the same chip set and were the same OS?
