Once upon a time, in aixshire, a technique called early allocation of paging space was used. If a page was loaded in physical memory (and it was not on storage disk) then a portion of paging space was reserved.

In solarisland something similar was being used: all anonymous memory was backed in swapping space.

So to have a paging (swap for solaris) space twice the dimension of physical memory made sense.

Today the VMs and the allocation algorithms changed and that raccomandation is a little bit outdated.
