Geez, the oracle tech just explicitly told me the opposite:

"Yes, you cannot backup an 8i database using 9i software. You need to execute the rman executable from the 8i instalation"

I'll look for the docs for the process - presumably I'd be setting ORACLE_SID to the 8i db and running catpatch from the 9i directory or something like that... I'll find it.
