Where is an approach to get that info by i3 Insight (now , i believe, is   Veritas ), they are doing it based on some statistical approach and can correlate the relationship of ip packets, i've seen a presentation about year ago for 3 tier with siebel and oracle, seems to work good, is of course not that cheap...
