ORA-16005: database requires recovery

Hi All,

I shutdown the database with the abort option (shutdown abort). Following this, I do the following:

1)start the instance
2)execute SQL to mount the database
3)execute SQL to Open the database in READ-ONLY mode.

At this point I get an error, which says: ORA-16005: database requires recovery

I know that this is because I issued a shutdown abort before, and that a subsequent startup will require instance recovery procedures.

I do not get the error if I open the database in READ/WRITE mode.

Any particular reason why I get an ORA-16005 in READ-ONLY mode?
