Yes, that's right what I remembered, dbstart runs independently from the normal environment variables. It seems that the new way (introduced in AIX 4.3) to run programs at system startup (via a file in /etc/rc.d/rc2.d) has not yet made it into Oracle's documentation.

By the way, Oracle support has given up on my problem and is suggesting me to report the error to IBM.
