Que:- My question: Did using the Net Configuration Assistant hose things up?

         Does it reconfigure anything else besides the TNSNames.ORA file?
Ans:- Whenever you configure throuhg [ Net Configuration Assistant ] it changes the file

         in TNSNAMES.ora only and it even not touches a single file.

Que:- In advance for any tips.
Ans:- Friend its not a tip, but its an hint as below.

         Whenever you do it through [ Net Configuration Assistant ] it picks up through

         the do domain names, which you can see the effect in the TNSnames.ora. But if

         you do it manually entry in the TNSnames.ora then it is normal with the SID

         without the domain name.
        So, please check with the name of the machine where you are
configuring for eg
        see below.
       ORA912 =

  (DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS_LIST =

      (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = 10.12.64.180)(PORT = 1521))     )
(CONNECT_DATA =

      (SERVICE_NAME = ora912)
    )
  )

ORA10G =
  (DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST =

USMUMRKONDA1.us.deloitte.com)(PORT = 1521))

(CONNECT_DATA =

      (SERVER = DEDICATED)
      (SERVICE_NAME = ora10g)

    )
  )

see the hostname and host
