Dang! I'm sorry, I should have had the presence of mind to say
that we're running Oracle 9i (9.2) on a Unix box (not sure what
flavor, assume Sun Solaris)

Thanx. That all sounds very sensible.

For sure!

I cant say you're all wrong, but the situation is somewhat
complicated. We're a "Non Profit" and squeezed for funds on all
ends. The management structure evolved (if thats the word) in the
19th century and shows the effects of being highly tuned for last
centuries problems and technical/social environment. A confluence
of unlucky stars (this one's on vacation, that one had a death in the
family, etc) combined with very shallow depth of support (nobody has
an assistant that can do or "almost" do everything the primary actor
can do) leaves us vulnerable to a Murphy's law attack.
Since I do have some Oracle experience as a developer (not DBA) and
some techy background (I can spell Unix, and am buzz word compliant)
I'm trying to "rise to the occasion" by hitting the books and by
shamelessly begging for a boost from anyone who actually knows
something. This is not my usual beat!
