I've been calling myself a "database consultant" for many years. To me it's just words, but to the companies and government it makes a big difference. I'd rather just have a local regular job, but where I live the pay isn't high enough to live on. In general I find that 3 month contracts that don't specify specific deliverables somehow just keep going on for years. Sometimes I'll spend one or two days at a place, doing an installation or solving a specific issue, but for DBA work you really have to know a site, and that takes a while. The reality is companies bring in a consultant for a specific skill or task, and then keep them if they discover both competence and that there are more skills. But won't hire because the pigeonhole has a lower salary. (I've turned down some offers because, why do the same work for less money? And sometimes regret it.)

I'm really stressed about it now because the wife and kids need lots of dental work. Not that it would have made a difference if I had dental benefits, most dental plans limit to way less than the cost.

I think Jonathan Lewis is coming out with a book about CBO tuning soon for which we have high expectations. And http://www.apress.com/book/bookDisplay.html?bID=456 Tom Kyte is too.
