Max Sessions Exceeded / Sessions Not Dying

Hi DBAs,

we've got 3 x 9.0.4.1 Oracle Apps Servers connecting to an Oracle 9.2.0.4 database. Unfortunately, not enough time was set aside for stress-testing...

We now have a situation where the maximum processes was reached and then obviously we had to increase this and restart the db.

What is the best resolution for this? (yes, I know it should have been tested more). Would setting up Shared Server on another listener help?

What's worrying particularly is that processes that are inactive just sit there and are not killed off. Is that something that's best dealt with by the database or the apps servers and if so how?!

Many thanks for any help.
