I don't really have an answer for you, but I can tell you that the good folks in this group are gonna request your Oracle version before they say much at all (although, based on the path you listed; we'll assume 8.1.0.x). They're also gonna ask you why you're so resistant to RMAN.

As for your issue, if you're not using a catalog (i.e. DB repository) then yes, RMAN is using the control file. Please don't try this before someone (i.e. wait for the gurus) confirms/denies, but this might work...

In rman, execute: "change archivelog all validate;"

I don't know if this works for nocatalog or not, so stay tuned (I'm new to the game here).
