I don't recall that particular scam, but there's nothing new under the sun. Concert promoters now "give away" music CD's (in reality, including the cost in the price of the ticket) so they can report them as album sales in Billboard magazine.
Closer to topic, I recently attended a one-day class presented by a member of the Oak Table Network (http://www.oaktable.net), and frankly the tipping point for my attendance was the inclusion of a copy of "Oracle Insights -- Tales of the Oak Table", which retails for $40 USD or $26.39 USD at Amazon.com. I wonder if the copies handed out in the class counted toward the sales numbers...? ;-)
BTW, I actually started reading the book and have found it quite educational, so if you get your hands on a copy, check it out!
