if you run the 10.1 listener on a port other than 1521, you'll have to use the "local_listener" parameter in the init.ora (or spfile) if you are using dynamic registration.

better to run the 10.1 listener on the default port for all of the databases ... but IIRC, you can't connect to a 8.1.7 db inst via a 10.1 listener. It might have been that one can't connect to an 8.1.7 db inst via a 10.1 client.
