You're right. I remembered wrong. The tutorial I went through at http://e-docs.bea.com/wls/docs81/medrec_tutorials/resources.html#852931 says "Typically you always use an XA JDBC driver when creating a connection pool." It does not say you *must* use XA driver.

BTW, if a non-XA driver is used, exactly what functionality do I lose? Can I not do distributed transactions at all?
