I'm using version 8.1 SP4. I see a number of XA drivers for 9i:
*BEA's Oracle Driver (Type 4 XA) Versions:8.1.7,9.0.1,9.2.0
*Oracle's Driver (Thin XA) Versions:8.1.7,9.0.1,9.2.0,10
*WebLogic's Oracle Driver (Type 2 XA) Versions:8.1.7,9.0.1,9.2.0
DataDirect's Oracle Driver (Type 4 XA) Versions:8.1.7,9.0.1,9.2.0 Oracle's Driver (OCI XA) Versions:8.1.7,9.0.1,9.2.0,10

Would one service pack make that much difference?

You do need to use XA drivers for connection pools. But I'll let the BEA expert in this group explain the difference.
