In a nutshell:

There are many more SE jobs than DBA. There are an increasing number of SE jobs and a decreasing number of DBA jobs. An SE job in database programming is more likely to be around when you graduate than a DBA job. Anyone going for a DBA job now is more likely to get it if they have SE experience. Many of the traditional DBA roles have been subsumed into either automation or other jobs. The role of tuning is likely to grow - and it is really a subset of SE. Some SE is offshoreable, some is not. YMMV.
