Suppose this is a cold backup of a database taken on a system with different file layout.

Anyway - what Mr. Hari Om performed was legal and documented. Apart from the fact that there's no need to "RECOVER AUTOMATIC DATABASE ..." if he did shutdown immediate (normal). But attempt to recover database that doesn't need recovery is also legal and can do no damage, all have to be done is to cancel recovery when asked for non-existing arch.log.
