If you haven't invested too much time in 9.2.0.5.3, why don't you do yourself a favor and go straight to 9.2.0.6. Check the Metalink note regarding upgrading straight to a patchset - its in the 9.2.0.6 readme.
(must ... not ... discuss ... 10.1.0.3 ... upgrade ... yet)
No opatch required, just the 10g OUI that ships with the patchset.
Do yourself another favor and use 10g OFA naming conventions when
creating the directory structure.
And one more thing, set %ORACLE_BASE% to something like D:\oracle
(win32) prior to the install - and have your inventory where OUI and
OPatch can get along:
D:\oracle\inventory D:\oracle\product\9.2.0 D:\oracle\product\10.1.0\db_1
You'll be glad that you did, when you fire up a mix of 10g OUI and 1.0.0.0.51 OPatch when the next patchset comes out on 18-Jan-2005.
If you possibly can, wipe that box clean of Oracle 8.1.7 and the previous OUI home prior to installing 9.2 on it, as mentioned in various notes up in metalink.
