I saw the problem is nothing to do with the temp table. Why didn't you
mention the presence of the indexes on a & b in the first query? Or
there was no such indexes on them while runing the 1st query? Make sure
you have same indexes created on the tables.
You may also analyze your tables to get an optimal plan or you prefer
rule-based optimizer. If you've never analyze your tables, the
optimizer will run rule-based and pick up the indexes if they are
present
