Thanks. My sqlnet.ora does not have a default domain. And i'm using the sb9205 as the connect string, which is why i tested tnsping sb9205. The tnsnames adapter is 'resolving' correctly but tnsping is not succeeding, indicating some sort of 'port blocking'. The error message is correct, ORA-12154 (TNS:could not resolve service name) - tnsping is effectively timing out and the error seems logical.

The problem seems to be one of the pre-installed security software running on my just purchased Dell PC - Norton Internet Security, Norton Anti Virus or some 'built-in firewall' you mentioned. I tried disabling the Norton stuff but i have not been able to bring down whatever is blocking the tnsping from returning with an OK. I'm new to Windows XP and all the security stuff Dell has loaded into the computer and was hoping someone else had dealt with similar problems.

Any suggestions on getting the tnsping to succeed?

Thanks & regards,
- Tom
