Hello Jim,

this is a very generic error and therefore hard to advise. You wrote ... sucessfully installed ... what?

You should check /etc/oratab for a correct entry of your new database. Use dbca to create scripts for your new database but execute them manually to see when the first error occurs. Back with this information here it would be a much better position to help for all.

Oh ... and try to keep the SGA of the new database for the first as small as possible to ensure that you kernel parameter will still fit. Greetings,
