I don't know if it's the same underlying bug, but we found a bug in
9.2.0.4 about a year ago (bug 3224473) wherein likewise you would get
fewer rows when you made a LIKE clause less specific.
Oracle Support eventually said that "our" bug was actually the same as
another bug that was already being worked; that's the last I heard.
Unfortunately, I can't find records on which was the "main" bug report
that our bug was merged with. Maybe if you tell your support analyst
to look at 3224473 they'll be able to figure out if it's all the same
problem. We've upgraded to 9.2.0.5 since then, and I haven't gotten
around to checking whether it is still there.
