I'll re-phrase your question: Is 10g today to what 10g will become as 9i Release 1 was to 9i Release 2? Or 8.1.5 to 8.1.7?

I can't answer that definitively, because it requires an insight into the future.

But I have always called 10g "9i Release 3". Make of that what you will.
