ORA-01033: ORACLE initialization or shutdown in progress in"

Hello,

I am by no means a dba, I just inherited a Linux box that is running it. The machine crashed a bit ago and the database doesn't want to start.

The error msg I get is a "ORA-01033 ORA-01033: ORACLE initialization or shutdown in progress in"

The machine it was running on had a disk go offline (it's a raid) The disk has been rebuild and everything seems to be working, except the oracle database doesn't seem to start.

Is there a document that can guide you through the process of bringing the database up again ? (as I said I don't even want to pretend I am a dba)

I tried some things, but what I get stuck with is :

SVRMGR> RECOVER DATABASE UNTIL CANCEL;
