A lot rides on that "etc"! Environment variables? Directories, permissions, actually applying the new kernel parameters and not merely typing them in a configuration file....
There is a worked install of 10g on www.dizwell.com. It uses White Box, but it's identical to RHAS3. It also does it inside a virtual machine, but that should make no difference.
If you follow those steps exactly, and miss nothing out, I cannot see why it wouldn't work.

More detail, please. Does the GUI actually appear, and you can click through some of the pages before it just vanishes? Or are you talking about seeing merely the check of operating system version in the terminal window before the GUI is actually invoked?
I realise this is no great comfort, but 10g usually installs (especially onto Linux) really very simply, so that if for some reasons it doesn't, it is invariably user error or flaky hardware that is the root cause (it's the first Oracle installation on Linux where that statement can actually be made with any degree of truth!).
I'd suggest just starting from scratch, following the Dizwell steps exactly, and you should be fine. I'm sure we could tinker with things first, but the wipe and restart approach is probably going to be quicker and come with more long-term assurance.
