With that few scanty details it is difficult to tell what you are doing wrong. You don't tell for instance, whether you have set up 2 different Oracle homes (which you need to do), or whether you are simply overriding the existing 8.1.7 Oracle_home with the 9.2 details.

All installs are logged. The actual log file name is shown to you when the installation starts. I guess you need to look into the installation log file to check out what is going wrong.

Having 2 different installs on 1 system is perfectly possible as long as they are in different oracle_homes
