Based on what versions would that be?

8.0? I'd agree.
8i? I'm starting not to agree.
9i? Definitely not.

Now your experience may be different, in which case it would be helpful to have just a little bit more detail.

Crikey. I'd not be taking any bets on your data surviving a disaster recovery AND a non-DBA trying to get it back, no matter how clever the software is!
