It's not just the tapes. You also have to worry about the tape drive(s). A bad tape drive will easily destroy your tapes if you aren't lucky.
Either magnetic media requires mirroring if you want to reasonably certain that you will get your data back.

Tapes are painfully slow to work with. If your tape library is shared by the rest of the enterprise your pain only grows. Nearline storage that is more or less under your own control is much more effective when it comes time to recover.
In general, disks are more likely to be under your control and onsite.
