If you still have the client CDs for Windows you can probably get the v2 
SQL*Net client to install on XP (even better odds for Windows 98) and 
the 2.x version of the ODBC driver will then work (also installed with 
the Windows client 7.x). You'll need to be sure that the DecNET flavor 
of SQL*Net is installed and configured (which will require a DecNET card 
in each of the client PCs--that might be the hardest piece of kit to lay 
your hands on).
