If you're going to quote an error number, it would be more than helpful to quote the error *text*, too. I for one don't happen to keep all thirty thousand Oracle error numbers at the forefront of my brain just so I can impress people at dinner parties by quoting them as the mood takes me.

That aside, I believe that error simply refers to 'this is not a valid option for alter system'.... and I think that means you've encountered the one bug that still besets the spfile (as documented in the www.dizwell.com FAQ), namely that you are supposed to be able to alter the dispatchers parameter in the spfile with an alter system command, but you can't actually do so.

There is only one way I know of to actually set it, and that's to export to an init.ora, edit the init.ora, and then re-export to an spfile. Again, all documented at dizwell.com.
