Well, I won't flog a dead horse, but no, they are no help whatsoever for beginners. As one who has to pick up the pieces when students walk in through the door, their minds full of half-truths, myths and no-truth-whatsoever, I can attest to the fact that Don B's advices are an appalling waste of time, generally. Not just my time, but students' too. They want to learn, but they have no means of distinguishing between the sound and the humbug, and get seriously mislead as a result. Trouble is, once the wrong stuff is in their head, it takes a lot of persuading to get it out again.

I have less trouble getting a SQL Server user to think in Oracle terms than I do getting a BBS (Burleson-Brainwashed Student) to think rationally.

Beginners, in other words, are precisely the poor saps that Don B. targets, and are the worst prepared of all to be able to sift his occasional shafts of wisdom from his usual flim-flam. They need protecting. My standard advice is "anything by Oracle Press is suspect; anything with the word TUSC on it is deeply suspect; and anything with the name Burleson on it.. well, just save yourself the bother and visit the 'Fiction' section of your local bookstore".

Regards
HJR
