Marcin -

From a very bright Windows system manager:

"MS supports them (named pipes) and supports them extensively.

MS refers to them by various names – but basically they are all based on the NetBIOS Transport at the T layer of the OSI model and at the APS layers of the OSI model they use a protocol called System Message Block (SMB) or also know as Microsoft RPC.

A lot of MS Programs use it – MS SQL Server, Exchange, MS File and Print traffic, etc. They use it via port 135, 137, 139 and then ports above 1024 after the session has been negioated on both sides. Generally one of the 13x ports is running the RPC Endpoint mapper and client for communicate to it – and establish ports above 1024 for conversation over a "named pipe". "

Kind regards,
jh
