I had a client (I was called in on performance tuning ) (is currently ) using RBO on RAC DB VER = 9.2 . Very snappy fast Sun boxes.

Wondering why things were slow. RBO and a 64-k sort area size helped in slowing things down.

Was it RAC ? No.

Was it an existing system Pro*C or COBOL that had been upgraded ?

No - there were 60 developers happily banging out code. (2 months ago)

optimizer_mode=rule in the SPFILE.

They won't move to CBO.

Head in hands and walk away. What can you do (With RAC ! ho ho ho ) ? (well there's a lot but it's like living in a timewarp )

Second : Here's an snip from an email I received last week from a vendor support for someone else's database

Before a batch joib
"Before they do any of that they should confirm that there are no statistics for any object within the database. I checked XXXXXXX and found that a large number of objects were analyzed on Nov 14 at around 15:30. This will cause problems with query optimization and may result in behaviour like they are seeing (excessive resource usage, etc).

The following script will delete all table and index statistics (if any). They can check for statistics by doing a count(*) from dba_tables and dba_indexes where the last_analyzed date is not null."

Mad laughter follows.

I'm going off to sacrifice a goat or something to get into that "Ancient mood "
