I DON'T think it is inevitable that all IT professionals end up in management. I think THAT is ridiculous!

I didn't go to extra school (college) to be a manager. I went and majored in Computer Science because that is what I liked.

What do they expect? You become a Programmer/DBA and then you can be the utlimate thing , a manager? Wrong!

If you like the job, why do you have to change? Grow? There are many opportunites to grow in IT technical jobs.

If you can't do a job you enjoy at least some, then why bother?

I enjoy DBA and programming. What the heck is wrong with that?

I have been doing IT work for 22 years and there were many technical opportunities along the way... programming, DBA+Programming Combo, and just DBA. Yes, there were management/supervisor positions available, but I chose to stay technical.

Yes, it is a never ending training/learning process. If you don't like that, you might want to consider other jobs.
