I've seen tons of DBA who will never in my mind be senior DBA's, even if they keep the same position for the next 30 years. Nothing gets me as mad as to hear "I'm the one who knows, I've been a DBA 3 years longer than you". Too many DBA's are happy to just keep things running, and look the other way if a developer comes to ask them some tuning advice or some help with some PL/SQL code. Therefore, telling you a timeframe to become a senior DBA is in my opinion useless and senseless. My list of really, really senior Oracle DBA includes Tom Kyte, Jonathan Lewis, Sybrand, Steve Adams, Howard Rogers, ... (please no one don't get mad if I forget them, I'm just going from memory!).
