Hi Paul,
yes you are of course right and I was aware of Geoffs suggestions in his book. I contributed to the same thread you mention at the time. I didn't muddy the waters with it here for two reasons. It does as you say cover access from MS Access but not from VC++ and secondly that thread was about preventing access completely from SQL*Plus and MS Access but the OP here wants to stop inserting and deleting not prevent access and this is best solved in the database by ensuring the user logged in with does not have privileges to do delete or insert and has to way to enable them herself.
But if the OP is interested, he should also take a look at that thread or in Geoff Ingrams book "High performance Oracle".
