The guideline is you need as much disk capacity to hold all the archive logs between 2 backups. After making a backup (during which you backup the archive logs) you can delete the archive logs. Of course you can make backups of archive logs in between those database backups.
The size you need can be determined from v$log_history.
From what I read here your backup strategy looks insufficient to me.
