So did you actually try to install? Or are you simply basing your comments on someone else's interaction?
Many people do use the downloaded version and install without a
problem. I see several good installs from the downloaded version nearly
every week
in my business.
In my experience, many who run into problems simply have not taken time to prep their system properly. That occasionally means reading the install docco and not simply following a default 'point and click' install. Or it could mean going to the Oracle By Example site (http://otn.oracle.com/obe/start/index.html) and following the step by step install guide.

I know the stuff Microsoft sends out. Got it here - same list; installs
great, does the simple demos great. However, I'm not impressed as I
need to code too much to get the same functionality I get with the
Oracle product. Reminds me of the Model-T Ford "any color as long as
it's black"! Ultimately it costs me & my customers way too much.
To each his/her own! (Based on your comments, I suspect 'your own' may not be here.)
By the way, the metalink note talks about having conflicting Java
environments and how to unravel them - something that is usually avoided
by reading the manual in the first place. (But I can see how that would
be Oracle's fault.) A generic problem, kinda like trying to compile
with Borland's IDE but Microsoft's C++ libraries intercepting due to
some environment variables. Or a bit like what happens when developers
update common DLLs, not bothering to check whether others may have
updated the same DLLs. The kind of problem that can be caused by point
'n click developers, who can do things fast maybe 'cause they don't need
(don't have time) to read the manuals.
