Help us out here. In your subject you are installing 9i and by your last 
sentence you have reverted to 8i? That may be your problem.

But seriously which verison of whatever? There is no such thing as 8i or 
9i. There is 8.1.5, 8.1.6, 8.1.7, 8.1.7.4, 9.0.1, 9.0.2, 9.2.0.1, etc.

And while at it how about some hardware information like O/S and amount 
of RAM.

Some of us can't afford crystal balls so close to Christmas.
